Children’s feet and gait (walking) is a complex developmental process throughout childhood. Even before a child starts walking, their feet and legs are undergoing many complex changes. As a parent, you want to know about your child’s development and posture. At Eltham Foot Clinic, we have 17 years of experience managing children’s feet. We assess children from their very first steps, walking, running and playing. During childhood a child’s foot may appear:
- Excessively flat foot posture (pronated)
- Excessively high arched foot posture (supinated)
- Pigeon toe walking or intoeing or outtoeing
- Knocked knees
- Asymmetrical walking patterns
Many of these factors, and more, can be assessed in the clinic, diagnosed and effectively managed. It is important to remember that no two children are alike so a professional’s opinion should always be sought when it comes to children’s feet.
At Eltham Foot Clinic for each child under the age of 18 years presenting with foot or gait concerns, we undertake a complete a:
- Orthopaedic Assessment of hips, knees, ankles and feet
- Neurological Assessment
- Enquiry in to birth history, milestones and familial patterns
By completing these assessments we can effectively diagnose and manage your child’s foot posture and gait. We are registered with the NDIS, so if eligible, all you need to do is contact us for a service agreement and booking and we can take the rest from there.
Eltham Foot Clinic has a close relationships with the surrounding orthopaedic paediatricians and neurologists. Our practice is strongly guided by the Victorian Paediatric Orthopaedic Network (VPON) and the Victorian Paediatric Clinical Network (VPCN) assuring you your child is given the best evidence based practice.
Some key signs to look out for as a parent that your children’s feet might be causing a problem are:
Asymmetry in walking patterns and uneven wear on footwear
Reduced activity levels or not keeping up with other children
Wants to be carried to locations rather than walk independently
Complains of foot, knee or hip pain suddenly
